In the Chosen-garatsu style, a milky straw-ash glaze is poured over a dark iron glaze. On this half-cylinder bowl, the white flows into the black, above an unglazed foot of rough, iron-rich clay.

Fractures and Missing Clay Restored

Over four months, Rio Hashimoto, a lacquer artist who holds a Master's degree in Lacquer Arts from Kyoto City University of Arts and whose work has received art awards, restored this broken bowl. She rejoined its fragments and rebuilt the damaged areas in cured, polished layers of natural urushi. She then sprinkled 24K marufun (spherical gold powder) over the restored areas in the maki-e manner, sealing it under a thin coat of raw urushi so that both cured into one durable layer. Finally, exacting roiro hand-polishing, requiring a high degree of skill, brought out the gold's rich, deep luster. Food-safe, the bowl can be used for matcha.

A Tea Bowl of Hizen

Valued in Japanese tea culture since the late sixteenth century, Chosen-garatsu is known for milky straw-ash glaze flowing over dark iron, as it does on this bowl. Branching 24K gold extends across both glazes and widens where the missing clay was rebuilt, an open record of the vessel's history. Whether held for matcha or set out to be seen, a chawan carries that history plainly. The Karatsu potters, the tea masters who chose their work, and Hashimoto's months of patient restoration are all present in this one, and each owner in turn is the one who carries it to the next.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0510/1803/9485/files/kintsugi-matcha-bowl-karatsu-ware-24k-gold-sold-out-at0191.png?v=1793259491
