This small plate carries that heritage in richly detailed sometsuke cobalt painting: peonies and karakusa scrolls along the rim, a lobed medallion framing a landscape of houses and trees, and a white circle left open at its center.

Night Sky Painted in Urushi

Rio Hashimoto, a lacquer artist who holds a Master's degree in Lacquer Arts from Kyoto City University of Arts and whose work has received art awards, spent four months restoring this broken plate. She rejoined its fragments, filled the damaged areas, and formed a smooth, cured foundation with natural urushi. She then sprinkled 24K marufun (spherical gold powder) over the restored areas in the maki-e manner and sealed it with a thin coat of raw urushi, creating a single durable layer. The most demanding stage, roiro, involved meticulous hand-polishing to give the gold its rich, deep luster. Finally, she painted the central white circle as a star-filled night sky in urushi-e. Food-safe, the plate can be used as tableware.

A Night Sky Over the Village

The original painting shows a village beneath a blank white circle; Hashimoto transformed that space into a star-filled night sky in urushi-e, so that porcelain painting and lacquer painting now form a single scene across two eras. More than a thousand years old, the technique remains part of the practice of contemporary lacquer artists such as Hashimoto; here it makes the restoration an act of painting, uniting the Imari painter's landscape with a living artist's sky. Food-safe, the plate serves equally well on the table or on a stand. Urushi-e is the painterly side of Hashimoto's own practice, and with this plate go the Imari painting, the lacquer story laid over it, and the months of an artist's attention.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0510/1803/9485/files/kintsugi-plate-ko-imari-urushi-e-24k-gold-front-un0058.jpg?v=1792049326
