Product Description

<About Kintsugi Part>
Since the original vessel was broken into pieces, the broken parts were carefully joined using only urushi (Japanese natural lacquer), and then more urushi was applied to increase the strength of the entire vessel.
In addition to repairing using the traditional Kintsugi technique, gold leaf is applied to the uneven surface created by the urushi, and then different color urushi is applied.
This allows to create a shiny, three-dimensional and gorgeous Kintsugi piece.

<About the Original Vessel>
This vessel is called Shigaraki ware, from a production area callied Shigaraki in Shiga prefecture next to Kyoto prefecture.
Shigaraki ware has been prized as tea utensils since ancient time. Shigaraki ware characterized by its unique aesthetic sense of "cold and dry beauty", which is a spirit of "SADO (tea ceremony)". It represents a dignified and refreshing feeling in the crisp air of early winter when trees wither.
Unlike Kyo ware, the artist creates the pottery by himself/herself from start to finish. As each piece is handmade, no two pieces are alike. This makes the piece a valuable work of art. This piece is upcycled, as a vintage piece that was accidentally broken during use.

<Thoughts Behind the Piece>
We aim to create a sustainable, yet luxurious pieces by reviving the thoughts and times of all the artisans involved in the creation of this fine vessel through kintsugi. By expressing the lava of the earth with Kintsugi and urushi, we created this Kintsugi piece so that those who use can feel the strength of nature at hand.
The other piece, Lava & Nature1, has a different pattern, so you can enjoy different landscapes from each other.

May you feel the beauty of the imperfection of Kintsugi.

All materials we use are natural and do not have any risks of toxicity.

The piece comes with a Paulownia box, including care advises and a certificate of origin and quality.

How to care for Kintsugi Piece

  • After use, wash the pieces using a soft sponge and food-safe detergent.
  • Rinse them in lukewarm or cool water and completely dry them using a soft dish cloth.
  • Do not soak them in hot or cold water for long periods of time. This may cause the urushi or maki-e lacquer to peel or fracture.
  • The urushi (Japanese lacquer) may break or the maki-e lacquer decoration may peel off if the piece is dropped or if it collides with other hard objects. Please handle these pieces carefully.
  • Do not place these pieces in the microwave or dishwasher.
