Kintsugi, derived from the Japanese words "kin" (gold) and "tsugi" (to mend), is the ancient art of restoring broken pottery with natural Urushi lacquer and enhancing it with powdered metals such as pure gold.
Though often recognized abroad simply as “golden joinery,” kintsugi is in fact one expression within Japan’s broader tradition of urushi lacquer arts.
More than restoration, it is rooted in wabi-sabi—embracing imperfection, resilience, and renewal, while honoring the vessel’s history.
To truly understand this art, one must first look to its foundation: urushi lacquer, a natural and sustainable material remarkable for its strength and versatility. For centuries, this living medium has been used to create Japan’s distinctive artistry.
Why Urushi Is the Heart of Kintsugi?
Urushi lacquer is a natural, sustainable material derived from the sap of the lacquer tree. It has been used for centuries in kintsugi due to its remarkable properties:
- Strong Adhesion: Ensures durable restoration.
- Water Resistance: Protects against leaks.
- Chemical Resistance: Resists acids, alkalis, salts, and alcohols.
- Antiseptic Properties: Naturally resists bacteria and fungi.
- Sustainable Material: Urushi is a natural, renewable resource, making it an eco-friendly choice for conscious collectors.
The Creation of Primal Verse
This work transcends typical restoration. Instead of powdered gold, this piece was reborn using a complex combination of advanced lacquer artistry, transforming the original vessel into a new masterpiece.
- Foundation & Gilding: The broken Shigaraki ware is first meticulously reassembled with urushi. Then, the seams are adorned not with fine powder, but with 24K gold leaf, creating a bold and lustrous presence that honors the break.
- A Canvas for Artistry: The restored area becomes a canvas for layered artistry. Here, the master applies a dynamic combination of techniques to create a new "keshiki" (landscape) on the vessel's surface.
- Layered Techniques: This series features a masterful blend of decorative methods, including kawari-nuri (expressive painting), haku-e (gilded leaf painting), and the passionate crimson of yakitsuke-urushi (fired lacquer), making each piece a unique artistic statement.
About This Piece
Balance in the Hand
Pick up this cup and notice its weight, its center of gravity, the way it settles into the palm. These qualities reflect forty years of an artisan’s understanding of form—Nobuyasu Suginaka shaped the restoration to complement the original potter’s intent, not override it.
Fire and Lacquer
Shigaraki clay bears the marks of its kiln—natural ash glaze, fire-color variations, a surface shaped by flame over days of wood-firing. Over this ancient foundation, the artisan layered Haku-e gold leaf and Yakitsuke fired lacquer in crimson, building a composition where the kiln’s chance effects meet the lacquer artist’s deliberate hand.
A Composed Geometry
In this third piece of the Earthen Pulse series, the gold and crimson elements settle into a quieter arrangement. The bold geometry of the gilded leaf work and the warmth of the fired lacquer achieve an equilibrium—neither dominates. The cup communicates not through volume but through the balance of its parts.

- After use, wash the pieces using a soft sponge and foodsafe detergent.
- Rinse them in lukewarm or cool water and completely dry them using a soft dish cloth.
- Do not soak them in hot or cold water for long periods of time. This may cause the urushi or maki-e lacquer to peel or fracture.
- The urushi (Japanese lacquer) may break or the maki-e lacquer decoration may peel off if the piece is dropped or if it collides with other hard objects. Please handle these pieces carefully.
- Do not place these pieces in the microwave or dishwasher.
