Product Description

<About Kintsugi Parts>
"The Rock" is a new piece that expands the sustainable concept of Kintsugi.
More gold is used to create a gorgeous finish.
Although urushi (Japanese lacquer) alone does not produce a three-dimensional finish, Mr. Suginaka uses only natural materials and his own special technique to create a three-dimensional finish.
The three-dimensional form makes the vessel upcycled sturdier than the original.
The bottom of the vessel is coated with several layers of black urushi to increase the durability when serving foods, or objects like Kokedama containing moisture.

<About the Original Vessel>
The original vessel is not ceramic, but wood. Wooden vessels are always cracked or chipped during production, and out of every 10 vessels, at least one will be defective, so such vessels have been traditionally discarded. By roughly removing the cracks, a one-of-a-kind vessel is created. The broken parts are finished with lacquer using the same technique as Kintsugi.

<Thoughts Behind the Piece>
Kintsugi has been considered an art of joining broken vessel with urushi.
However, in the sense that it can be used to upcycle and further increase the value of vessels that were unsalable due to defects during production, we believe the original vessel does not necessarily have to be only ceramic.
We named this piece "The Rock" because it is made of wood but has the looks of a rock.
The difference in texture is interesting and will definitely be the talk of the party.
You can serve sushi on it, or miniature bonsai trees, the fun is up to you!

At The Kintsugi Labo JAPAN, we aim to create works of art that our customers can feel the sustainable value by upcycling precious resources.

Note: The actual finish may differ from the picture shown, as the original wood cracks differently in each piece. Please be aware of this in advance.

May you feel a beauty of the imperfection in Kintsugi.

All materials we use are natural and do not have any risks of toxicity.

The piece comes with a Paulownia box, including care advises, a giveaway, and a certificate of origin and quality.

How to care for Kintsugi Piece

  • After use, wash the pieces using a soft sponge and food-safe detergent.
  • Rinse them in lukewarm or cool water and completely dry them using a soft dish cloth.
  • Do not soak them in hot or cold water for long periods of time. This may cause the urushi or maki-e lacquer to peel or fracture.
  • The urushi (Japanese lacquer) may break or the maki-e lacquer decoration may peel off if the piece is dropped or if it collides with other hard objects. Please handle these pieces carefully.
  • Do not place these pieces in the microwave or dishwasher.
