Product Description

<About Kintsugi Parts>
The chipped parts are all joined by only natural urushi (Japanese lacquer) using traditional Kintsugi techniques rather than chemical adhesives.
The rim of the chipped plate was finished with lustrous gold powder to create a vivid Kintsugi.
Mt. Fuji is hidden on the rim of only one of the three plates in the set.
Mr. Suginaka painted with Momiji (the maple leaf) by Maki-e in addition to Kintsugi.

<About the Original Vessel>
We purchased these, unintentionally chipped plates  that were supposed to be discarded from pottery store.
These small plates are "Shigaraki ware" (produced in Shiga Prefecture, next to Kyoto), which is famous for its tea ceremony.
Shigaraki ware is characterized by the reddish coloration of the clay.

<Thoughts Behind the Piece>
All three pieces have different patterns of Kintsugi, so we created them with the hope that you can feel a Japanese scenery using as room interiors or tableware.

May you feel a beauty of the imperfection in Kintsugi.

All materials we use are natural and do not have any risks of toxicity.

The piece comes with a Paulownia box, including care advises and a certificate of origin and quality.

How to care for Kintsugi Piece

  • After use, wash the pieces using a soft sponge and food-safe detergent.
  • Rinse them in lukewarm or cool water and completely dry them using a soft dish cloth.
  • Do not soak them in hot or cold water for long periods of time. This may cause the urushi or maki-e lacquer to peel or fracture.
  • The urushi (Japanese lacquer) may break or the maki-e lacquer decoration may peel off if the piece is dropped or if it collides with other hard objects. Please handle these pieces carefully.
  • Do not place these pieces in the microwave or dishwasher.
